The red mullet is highly valued fish, especially in the Mediterranean Region. The ancient Greeks regarded them as sacred to Hecate, and wealthy first-century Romans paid astronomical prices to watch its color change from red to gold, pale pink, vermilion, and blue as the Fish died. The fish is extremely perishable and must be consumed within a short time. The best season for the red mullet is the period between October to May. The red mullet has a profound taste of the sea. It has no fishy taste to it whatsoever but an iodine flavor that gives you the feeling of being on a boat in the Mediterranean on a windy day. The ancient Greeks regarded them as sacred to Hecate, and wealthy first-century Romans paid astronomical prices to watch its color change from red to gold, pale pink, vermilion, and blue as the Fish died.
Pike Perch or Sandre is a fresh-water fish closely allied to the Perch. The Sandre is a common and popular fish in Europe. It may reach 15 kilograms in size, although typical catches are considerably smaller. The fish are called “Pike Perch”, because they resemble the pike with their elongated body and head, and the perch with their spiny dorsal fin. Despite the name, they thrive rather slowly in water, and are very active at night. Their meat has a small flake and delicate texture with a mild and sweet taste. In July 2009 in Switzerland, a Sandre attacked tourists in a Lake near Italy, sending two to the Emergency Room with the worst cut being about 10 centimeters long. The zander was later caught by the local police who cooked it and offered it to the tourists for the trouble it caused. It is very unusual for Zanders to attack humans.
The weather is nice, the sea water is warm, you are going to walk along the seashore, among wave foam which is reaching the beach and refreshing your feet.... Suddenly you sense a puncture under your toe: a sea urchin, hidden under a clump of algae, has defended itself against your foot's aggression! Sea urchins appeared on earth around 500 millions years ago. Urchins are sought after for their gonads, the yellow-colored portion inside the shell and the only edible part of the creature. Known in Japan as "uni," there are 15 calories in every 2-teaspoon serving, which includes 48 milligrams of Omega-3 fatty acids, 1 gram of protein and 20 milligrams of fat. Urchins give off a salty ocean scent, and have a sweet, buttery taste with a firm texture. Best Season for Sea Urchin is October to May
New Zealand Groper
In New Zealand, "Groper" refers to a type of Wreckfish, Polyprion oxygeneios, which goes by the Māori name of Hāpuku. Gropers having a stout body and a large mouth. They are not built for long-distance fast swimming. They can be quite large, and lengths over a meter and weights up to 100 kg are not uncommon. They swallow prey rather than biting pieces off it. They do not have many teeth on the edges of their jaws, but they have heavy crushing tooth plates. They habitually eat fish, octopus, crab, and lobster. They lie in wait, rather than chasing in open water. According to the film-maker Graham Ferreira, there is at least one record, from Mozambique, of a human being killed by one of these fish.
